Linear Complexity Lossy Compressor for Binary Redundant Memoryless Sources
A lossy compression algorithm for binary redundant memoryless sources is
presented. The proposed scheme is based on sparse graph codes. By introducing a
nonlinear function, redundant memoryless sequences can be compressed. We
propose a linear complexity compressor based on the extended belief
propagation, into which an inertia term is heuristically introduced, and show
that it has near-optimal performance for moderate block lengths.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Parallel dynamics of continuous Hopfield model revisited
We have applied the generating functional analysis (GFA) to the continuous
Hopfield model. We have also confirmed that the GFA predictions in some typical
cases exhibit good consistency with computer simulation results. When a
retarded self-interaction term is omitted, the GFA result becomes identical to
that obtained using the statistical neurodynamics as well as the case of the
sequential binary Hopfield model.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Belief Propagation for Error Correcting Codes and Lossy Compression Using Multilayer Perceptrons
The belief propagation (BP) based algorithm is investigated as a potential
decoder for both of error correcting codes and lossy compression, which are
based on non-monotonic tree-like multilayer perceptron encoders. We discuss
that whether the BP can give practical algorithms or not in these schemes. The
BP implementations in those kind of fully connected networks unfortunately
shows strong limitation, while the theoretical results seems a bit promising.
Instead, it reveals it might have a rich and complex structure of the solution

From Enslavement to Emancipation: Naming Practices in the Danish West Indies
AbstractIn most contexts, personal names function as identifiers and as a locus for identity. Therefore, names can be used to trace patterns of kinship, ancestry, and belonging. The social power of naming, however, and its capacity to shape the life course of the person named, becomes most evident when it has the opposite intent: to sever connections and injure. Naming in slave society was primarily practical, an essential first step in commodifying human beings so they could be removed from their roots and social networks, bought, sold, mortgaged, and adjudicated. Such practices have long been integral to processes of colonization and enslavement. This paper discusses the implications of naming practices in the context of slavery, focusing on the names given to enslaved Africans and their descendants through baptism in the Lutheran and Moravian churches in the Danish West Indies. Drawing on historiographical accounts and a detailed analysis of plantation and parish records from the island of St. Croix, we outline and contextualize these patterns and practices of naming. We examine the extent to which the adoption of European and Christian names can be read as an effort toward resistance and self-determination on the part of the enslaved. Computational capabilities of multilayer committee machines
We obtained an analytical expression for the computational complexity of many layered committee machines with a finite number of hidden layers (L < 8) using the generalization complexity measure introduced by Franco et al (2006) IEEE Trans. Neural Netw. 17 578. Although our result is valid in the large-size limit and for an overlap synaptic matrix that is ultrametric, it provides a useful tool for inferring the appropriate architecture a network must have to reproduce an arbitrary realizable Boolean function

Effect of powder metallurgy synthesis parameters for pure aluminium on resultant mechanical properties
In this work, pure aluminium powders of different average particle size were compacted, sintered into discs and tested for mechanical strength at different strain rates. The effects of average particle size (15, 19, and 35 Όm), sintering rate (5 and 20 °C/min) and sample indentation test speed (0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm/min) were examined. A compaction pressure of 332 MPa with a holding time of six minutes was used to produce the green compacted discs. The consolidated green specimens were sintered with a holding time of 4 h, a temperature of 600 °C in an argon atmosphere. The resulting sintered samples contained higher than 85% density. The mechanical properties and microstructure were characterized using indentation strength measurement tests and SEM analysis respectively. After sintering, the aluminium grain structure was observed to be of uniform size within the fractured samples. The indentation test measurements showed that for the same sintering rate, the 35 Όm powder particle size provided the highest radial and tangential strength while the 15 Όm powder provided the lowest strengths. Another important finding from this work was the increase in sintered sample strength which was achieved using the lower sinter heating rate, 5 °C/min. This resulted in a tangential stress value of 365 MPa which was significantly higher than achieved, 244 MPa, using the faster sintering heating rate, 20 °C/min
Trophic niche partitioning of five skate species of genus Bathyraja in northern and central Patagonia, Argentina
Overexploitation of marine communities can lead to modifications in the structure of the food web and can force organisms like elasmobranchs to change their feeding habits. To evaluate the impact that fisheries have on food webs and on the interactions between species, it is necessary to describe and quantify the diet of the species involved and follow it through time. This study compares the diet of five skate species using the data obtained from the by-catch of the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) fishery in north and central Patagonia, Argentina. Diet composition was assessed by analysing the digestive tract contents and trophic overlapping between species of the genus Bathyraja: Bathyraja albomaculata, Bathyraja brachyurops, Bathyraja macloviana, Bathyraja magellanica and Bathyraja multispinis. A total of 184 stomachs were analysed. The diets of B. albomaculata and B. macloviana mainly comprised annelids, whereas that of B. brachyurops primarily comprised fish, including hake heads discarded by the fishery. The diets of B. magellanica and B. multispinis were largely based on crustaceans. Despite the morphological similarities and their shared preference for benthic habitats, no complete diet overlaps were found between the different species. These results suggest that these skate species have undergone a process of diet specialisation. This is a common feeding strategy that occurs to successfully eliminate competition when resources are limited, which corresponds to the conditions found in an environment being affected by the pressures of overfishing.Fil: Tschopp, Ayelen.
